So, while I doubt it will be as awesome as the uselessly flashy video makes it out to be... I'm very intrigued. So far the real-world overlay doesn't seem ideal (seems to translate the environmental data into a generic background...?), but there's work yet to be done.

Microtransactions aside, I wonder what I can catch her in the tropical arctic?

All bad jokes aside, I'm not really too excited about Pokemon Go, I just know it'll be a disappointment. Plus, I'll look a bit dumb walking around and aiming my phone camera around the place.

Ahahahaahha, how quickly the tune changed... And wth are you talking about, people already go around pointing their smartphones everywhere.

I'm actually expecting this to turn out well compared to other 3rd party stuff. If I remember correctly Game Freak was sorta involved in this anyway, right? Or am I just pulling that out of my ass from some misinterpreted memory? Maybe don't take note of that part.

Also, for anyone who didn't realise, augmented reality will extremely likely mean map based, looking at Ingress. Not camera based with CGI Pokemon jumping around the place. Scaling down the trailer to a Pokemon game where the map is removed and you physically go to places to find Pokemon, and find real people to battle and trade with is what I'm thinking here. Or, maybe hoping. Who knows? Not me. We never lost control.

Check out the second link I posted, Dem. It was the only screenshotty type thing I could find, and it seems that Go actually is camera based, with CGI pokes. Background seemed generated, rather than captured, though... so, idk.

I saw the picture, but I don't know how you see that as a camera based augmented reality. That would mean that it's live footage from your phones camera plus a Pokemon on the screen, not a generated background like you said yourself. The whole thing looks like it doesn't need a camera at all, just GPS for location.

I'm thinking it's a hybridization. Augmented reality capture, sampling from previously generated generic backgrounds. Ie. sample outside world, match archive texture resources, generate moving image with pokemon.
