Pokemon of the Month - July 2014 - Pangoro Pangoro

About Pangoro
Although it possesses a violent temperament with arms that are mighty enough to snap a telephone pole. It charges ahead and bashes its opponents like a berserker, uncaring about any hits it might take. Despite all of this it won’t put up with bullying. It uses the leaf in its mouth to sense the movements of its enemies.

Interesting Facts
Hitoshi Ariga design Pangoro but not it's preevolution. (Pancham was designed by Megumi Mizutani)

Stats
Type: Fighting/Dark
HP - 95
Attack - 124
Defense - 78
Sp. Atk - 69
Sp. Def - 71
Speed - 58

Abilities
Iron Fist: The power of punching moves is increased by 20%.
Mold Breaker: The Pokémon's moves are not affected by foe’s abilities during battle
Scrappy: A Ghost-type foe can be hit by Normal-type & Fighting-type attacks.

Pangoro in competitive battling

Every generation there seems to be one fighting type pokemon who's design everyone likes except me. 4th gen was infernape, 5th Scrafty, and now we got Pangoro. Nothing wrong with the design I just don't see why everyone is going crazy over it. Never the less its design was good enough to be Pokemon of the month for July. Anyways not a whole lot of information on Pangoro (smogon doesn't even have any offical sets out yet) and I haven't seen it in battle so most of this is theory.

What I have figured out after a whole lot of research is that Pangoro is pretty much outclassed by its 5th gen cousin Scrafty. It's got a great attack stat but not really the speed to pull it off. Not too mention thanks to the addition of fairys it has 4x weakness and talonflame doesn't really help all that much since it's not going to be taking too many super effective hits with its defense stat. Still it still has a few tools that might make you think about using Pangoro.

Ninja Panda
Item: Choice Scarf
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HP
Nature: Jolly
-Earthquake
-Crunch
-Sky Uppercut/ Brick Break
-Stone Edge/ Poison Jab

A scarf set helps make up for the poor speed. Mold Breaker and earthquake go hand in hand to knock out levitating pokemon like rotom. Crunch is stab. Sky uppercut for stab or brick break for a weaker more accurate stab that can be used if your concerned about screens. Stone edge is for knocking out birds and poison jab is for fairys just pick your coverage. Scrappy can be used over mold breaker if you want your fighting moves to hit ghosts but you have crunch for that though it might be useful since your choice locked.

Picky Tricky Panda
Item: Choice Band
Trait: Mold Breaker
EV: 252 ATK / 252 HP / 4 Sp.Def
Brave Nature
- Hammer Arm
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Stone edge/poison jab

A lot like the last set only with trick room set up. Hammer arm is good stab and you loose speed every time you use it so it works with trick room. Crunch is stab. Earthquake is always a great move and works well with mold breaker to take levitating pokemon out. Stone edge and poison jab for coverage of your choice. You can use scappy instead of mold breaker to hit ghost types since your choice locked.

Other options
You can try bulk up but other pokemon do it better. It also has a neat move called parting shot which lowers the pokemon's attack and sp.atk and then forces Pangoro to switch out. Might be able to use it on a volt-turn team somehow.

Pangoro has always seemed so inherently adaptable with its moves and abilities, so I've always thought it would be a shame to lock it into a Choiced move, especially when the best speed it can reach is 354 - still in the range to be outsped by a handful of unpleasant things.

So, here's the Wallbreaker, which is also a great addition for hazard teams.

Pangoro - 252/252/6/0/0/0
Scrappy, Adamant - Leftovers/Sitrus Berry
Storm Throw - (via Throh)
Parting Shot
Stone Edge
Crunch/Circle Throw

The basic idea is to switch in on a bulky pokemon that's attempting to set up defensive walls (which, admittedly, not many people here but me try to do...) and smash through with the guaranteed crit of Storm Throw - it's also one of Pangoro's strongest attacks at 135BP after crit and STAB (60*1.5*1.5). Stone Edge covers its major flying weakness, especially when you can predict a switch to Talonflame or Togekiss. Parting Shot, its signature move, is simply a great catch-all for running away - and simultaneously lowering your opponent's attacking values. The last slot can go with the STAB of Crunch (though not as necessary with Scrappy) or the mind tricks of Circle Throw.

Another options is that Pangoro can do a decent Rest/Talk set with Guts, Storm Throw and Crunch.
