Pokemon of the Month - May 2014 - Yveltal Yveltal

I don't play Ubers and haven't played with Yveltal at all. This article is mostly theorycraft.

About Yveltal
When this legendary Pokémon's wings and tail feathers spread wide and glow red, it absorbs the life force of all living creatures. When its life comes to an end, it absorbs the life energy of every living thing and turns into a cocoon once more.

Interesting Facts
- Yveltal has the highest HP base stat of all Dark-type Pokémon.
- Yveltal is tied with Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Rayquaza for highest base stat total of all Flying types.
- Yveltal has the same stat distribution as Xerneas.
- Yveltal is the only Pokémon able to learn Focus Blast and Snarl through level-up.
- Yveltal, along with Xerneas, was designed by art designers Ken Sugimori and Yusuke Ohmura. Initial design for the two Legendary Pokémon was started by Sugimori, but he encountered 'artist's block', having a hard time coming up with concepts. For the first time, he gave the work over to another designer, Ohmura. Ohmura furthered the designs, after which Sugimori resumed to finish them

Yveltal Stats
HP - 126
Attack - 131
Defense - 95
Sp.atk - 131
Sp.def - 98
Speed - 99

Dark - Aura: Increases the damage dealt by Dark-type attacks by 33.3% for all Pokémon on the field. Its effects are reversed by Aura Break.

Yveltal in Competitive Battling
Ah, the fearsome realm of the Ubers. This title-legendary packs great mixed attacking stats, a fantastic hp stat (even by Ubers standards), a signature move that's actually useful, and typing that is very much anti-meta. Thanks to the popularity of psychic pokemon in Ubers (Mewtwo, Lugia, Deoxys), steel losing its weakness to Dark, Yveltal's dual STABs get near perfect coverage across the metagame which the notable exception of the other gen-6 title legendary, Tyranitar, fairy Arceus, Kelfki, and the rare Bisharp.

While Yveltal isn't as popular as Xerneas in the current Ubers meta, it should not be underestimated. With dual 131 attacking stats, decent 99 speed, and two useful immunities, Yveltal is a powerful mixed wall breaker, and a fantastic baton-pass recipient. Oblivion Wing and great HP allows Yveltal to be both bulky and powerful, and its plethora of dark STABs allow it to plough through most steel-type walls, and destroy Giratina, Lugia and Deoxys-D.

While Yveltal is incredibly hard to wall, it lacks boosting moves outside of the someone mediocre hone claws (which still has utility with a mixed set running Focus-Miss), and is slower than many offensive threats, and so will have trouble sweeping unaided. It also has a someone barren physical movepool, making pure physical sets somewhat

With all that, Yveltal is most certainly worthy of consideration on any Ubers teams.

Example Movesets

Yveltal @ Leftovers
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 48 HP / 236 SAtk / 224 Spd
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Disable
- Dark Pulse/ Sucker Punch
- Oblivion Wing

The Speed EVs with a Timid Nature lets it outspeed Jolly Rayquaza while the HP EVs give it 405 HP for 101 HP Subs that don't use up a quarter of its health. The rest is put into SpAtk for increased damage. Substitute is great for easing prediction and its two STABs give it perfect neutral coverage against everything but Tyranitar, Bisharp, Carbink, Mawile, Klefki, and Dedenne and I haven't seen many of any of them so far. Oblivion Wing is probably the best part of the set because it functions as both an attacking move as well as a psuedo Roost. Anything that doesn't resist it will take a good chunk of damage and Yveltal will at least be able to heal off the HP it used for Substitute.

Mixed Wallbreaker
Yveltal @ Life Orb
Mild or Rash Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Dark Pulse/ Oblivion Wing
- Focus Blast/ Air Slash
- Taunt

What? Wallbreaker running taunt? While Yveltal smashes most common defensive ubers pokemon, it does have one nemesis: Blissey. Because Yveltal's only decent physical attack is Sucker Punch, it has issues breaking special walls that don't have to attack. Taunting Blissey can force a switch, or let you heal a big chunk with Oblivion Wing on your next turn without fear of toxic or thunderwave.
